Abstract. The paper addresses retrial queues with variable rate of input flow. For such queues, a condition of the existence of stationary mode is found. The approximation approach is used in the calculation of stationary probabilities. The proposed scheme was applied to solve an optimization problem in a class of threshold strategies.
